Special Areas for Teaching Hospital[A1]

Teaching hospital accommodates education for medical students. It also called as university hospital which managed by university to educate medical students for bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees (Medline, 1997, in Ministry of Health, 2009). Teaching/ university hospital provides different services from general services, especially in:

1) Guaranteeing the quality of services, patient safety, and evidence based practice

2) Practicing newest therapy method

3) Appropriate medical technology

4) Shortening length of stay for the same disease

5) Better treatment effect and survival rate

6) 24 hours consultation from medical education staff

Services

1. Min. 12 accredited services both for type A and B hospital

2. Min. 4 basic specializations (internal, pediatric, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology) and 11 other specializations (radiology, anesthesia, clinical pathology, dermatology and venereal, dental, anatomy pathology, and medical rehabilitation)

Have priority program service center or other accredited special services for related field

Min have 5 accredited services

Students

Capacity of students based on ratio between the students and lecturer, max 1: 5 which decided by Director of Teaching hospital and Head of medical (or health sciences) education institutions

Educational Administration

Room for secretariat staff (non- educational staff) who responsible to manage the completion of educational process of students (e.g. learning tools, rooms, assignment mark, adjustment of schedule and administration)

Educational Process

Teaching hospital should provide adequate facilities, infrastructure and equipments for educational implementation process based on the education module includes the availability of number and variety of cases or patients interacted with the students.

Criteria(s):

1. Agreement documents about the availability of physical facilities between the Director of Teaching hospital, Division Leaders, and Head of medical (or health sciences) education institutions and its realization

2. Educational supporting facilities, such as:

a. Learning room facility

b. Discussion room

c. Library

d. Hospital information system

e. Information technology

f. Documentation system

g. Skill lab

h. Phantom and audiovisual equipments

3. On duty room which have safe design for students and fulfill the requirements and standards of supporting facilities and infrastructure

4. The number and variety of cases is suitable with learning materials for students

5. Learning process and research facilities shall be provided in all service unit or in integrated research institution

General Requirements

1) Location

a) Accessible for community

b) Free from pollution or flood

c) Far enough from railway, playground area, industrial area, and waste manufactures.

2) Ratio of bed with floor area

a) Baby/ fetus room

(1) non- isolation room minimal 2 sqm/ bed

(2) isolation room minimal 3.5 sqm/ bed

b) Adult/ pediatric room

(1) non-isolation room minimal 4.5 sqm/ bed

(2) isolation room minimal 6 sqm/ bed

3) Hospital system

(1) water supply

(2) power supply and uninterrupted power supply (UPS)

(3) water treatment, incinerator, and waste disposal

4) Other facilities:

(1) Parking area, with ratio1 parking area : 10 beds

(2) Trash can in every radius 20 m

c) Operating services should not be free from noise

d) Pediatric clinic should be placed nearby maternity clinic and not be placed nearby pulmonary clinic

e) Inpatient services should be separated from public zone with nurse station ratio is 1nurse station: 35 beds, sink should be provided

f) Minimum room dimension:

(1) Examination room : 3x3 sqm

(2) Procedure room : 3x4 sqm

(3) Waiting room : 6x6 sqm

(4) Utility room : 3x3 sqm

g) Corridor for patient and equipment should be minimum 2.44 m in wide, and 1.83 m for other purposes

h) If hospital have CSSD, then special sterilization is not necessary in rooms, except in dental clinic, and surgery

i) Nursing area have:

Toilet should be immediately accessible to patient room or ward, with ratio for patient 1 toilet: 10 beds, and 1 toilet: 20 hospital staffs

(1) Free from insects and rat

(2) Maximum dust level 150 ug/ m³ during 24 hours

(3) No stink (H2S or NH3)

(4) Lighting 100-200 lux

(5) Temperature 26-27°C (with AC) or room temperature (without AC) with adequate circulation

(6) Humidity 40-50% (with AC) or ambient humidity (without AC)
